The only Mechanical Music Museum in Finland is located in Varkaus along the main road 5 in the heart of the enchantingly beautiful Finnish lake district. It is the largest museum of its kind in Scandinavia and one of only 40 such museums in the whole world.
A visit to the Varkaus Mechanical Music Museum is a fascinating journey back in time for all ages. Here the music world of mechanical musical instruments of times gone by comes alive once again: music boxes, mechanical pianos, violins and accordions, hurdy-gurdies from small hand organs to the magnificent Amadeus Street organ, the 75-man Popper Goliath: the world´s largest orchestrion, as well as numerous gramophones and juke boxes used for reproducing and storing music.
The whole history of mechanical music from 1850 to the present day is to be seen and heard. During the interesting and entertaining guided tour (over 1 hour) you will see and hear most of the museum´s 400 instruments which are in seven large rooms furnished in the style of their time period.
